2012-01-20-CNN led off the S.C. debate held in Charleston South Carolina with a question fired at Newt Gingrich about his former marriage. However, the invite only audience hurt the overall truth of whatever went on last night. The Gingrich attack was in retrospect a puffy softball lobbed toward him so that he may swing to the already approving crowd he more than likely invited....only a real crowd of American citizens and not an invite only crowd could you gain a effective thermometer on how people really feel. Why CNN chose to have an invite only crowd when the North Charleston Coliseum is capable of holding more than 20k people is beyond me but the crowd reaction at that debate is by no means an effective measure of how real people feel.
2012-01-19 Update- The South Carolina Primary just keeps getting better and better. The latest news is now Rick Perry is out. Today Rick Perry announced he will not continue his bid for Presidency. However, this isn't the biggest news of the day. Just when Newt Gingrich apepared to be moving up on Romney, here comes his ex wife. Newt Gingrich's first wive is set to go publci about their marriage and the details shed some questions on exactly how moral and ethical Mr. Gingrich is. ABC news has issued a press release containing snippets and it seemed included in them is how Newt asked for an "open" marriage and also asked for a divorce over the phone. Tonights Primetime interview with the former Mrs. Gingrich could be a bombeshell for the Gingrich campaign. January 21, 2012 is the official date for the South Carolina Republican Presidential Primary, however as of today the candidates are barnstorming the state. Mitt Romney is charging down south hot on the heels of his fresh New Hampshire win. However, Ron Paul is riding in a car right behind him. South Carolina has normally been a very conservative state and also deeply based in Christian roots. Mitt's Mormon background may derail his momentum as he heads into the Palmetto state. Although Mitt is conservative enough, he has also been endorsed by Governor Nikki Haley and lately noone likes Nikki in the state, not even her own party.
So with Mitt facing a tough uphill challenge in the state, who will win? There is no denying Newt Gingrich may make a comeback. Newt is in his backyard down south and many southerners seem to like him for one reason or another. Ron Paul presents an interesting catalyst in the state. Not only does he appeal to the wide and growing younger age voters, but he also appeals to a segment that is growing larger in the state. People who desire individual freedoms and less Federal government.
Remember South Carolina was the first state to seced from the Union in the 1800's and actually it wasn't that long ago. Old feelings are still harbored as family roots run deep. Ron paul plays right into these voters ideals with his staunch stance against the Federal Reserve, Big government and individual personal freedoms.
As of right now i would say it is a toss up. Mitt will take the big business vote, but lately in the state that vote is shrinking. South Carolina is in dire economic straits and big business isn't as powerful as it once was. Newt will take his share and Paul will suprise many down here. Look for these three to fight it out with Perry coming in fourth.
